Kingdom Protista Flashcards
1
Q
Protista are different from minerals because they have:
A
- a membrane Boyd nucleus
- organelles
- sexual reproductive cycle
2
Q
There are three types of protists;
A
A. Zooplankton: animal like protists
B. Phytoplankton: plant like protists
C. Slime Molds: fungus like protists
3
Q
Common characteristics
A
Most are motile (can move)
Unicellular(more) or Multicellular
Eukaryotic ( have membranes and bound nucleus)
4
Q
A. Zooplankton / protozoans
A
- heterotrophic
- grouped by type of locomotion
- four phyla
1. Phylum ciliophora
2. Phylum rhizopoda
3. Phylum zoomastigophora
4. Phylum sporozoa
5
Q
- Phylum ciliophora
A
Example: paramecium
- have cilia to help them move
- have a groove to collect food
“Groove” do not do photosynthesis
6
Q
- Phylum rhizopoda
A
Example: amoeba
- moves by pseudopods ( false feet)
- salt and fresh water
7
Q
- Phylum sporozoa
A
- non-motile protists
- cause serious disease in humans
- example: plasmodium ( causes malaria)
- do not move on their own
8
Q
- Phylum zoomastigophora
A
- have flagella for movement
- most are parasites ( host - live in)
- reproduce asexually ( binary fission)
- trypanosoma brucci, responsible for African sleeping sickness
9
Q
B. Phytoplankton
A
- plants like protists
- contain chlorophyll
- unicellular ( some multicellular)
- made up of 5 Phyla
1. Euglenophta ( euglena)
2. Pyrrophyta ( dinoflagellates)
3. Chlorophyta (algae)
4. Rhodophyta (red algae)
5. Chrysophyta (diatoms)
10
Q
- Euglenophyta
A
Example: euglena
11
Q
- Pyrrophyta
A
(Dinoflagella)
- flagellates - spinning motion
- unicellular, photosynthetic
12
Q
- Chlorophyta
A
(Algae)
- cell wall with cellulose
- contain chlorophyll
Example: Spirogyra
13
Q
- Rhodophyta
A
Red algae
- ribbon - like appearance
- may be multicellular
14
Q
- Chrysophyta
A
- diatoms
- hard shells
- food for small aquatic animals, produce oxygen (75% oxygen on earth)
15
Q
C. Slime Molds
A
- fungus- like protists
- consumers, found on forest food
- heterotrophic by ingestion
- usually exists as mass of cells surrounded by slime coating
- slide along ground, ingesting materials
