Kingdom Protista Flashcards
Characteristics of protists
Eukaryotic, mostly unicellular, mostly aerobic, produce asexually and sexually.
What are the three types of Protista?
Animal-like, plant-like, and fungus-like.
What characteristics do animal-like Protista have?
They move, consume other organisms for food (heterotrophs), some are parasites causing human illness.
What characteristics do plant-like Protista have?
They photosynthesize
What characteristics do fungus-like Protista have?
Absorb nutrients from other organisms.
How are organisms in this kingdom helpful and harmful to humans?
Animal Helpful- can help organisms digest food/cellulose (flagellata)
Animal Harmful- can cause serious symptoms to humans like nausea, fever and headaches (malaria)
Plant helpful- produce oxygen during photosynthesis, can be made into food, can be great fertilizer, used in wastewater treatment, can be used as natural pigment.
Plant harmful- can produce potent neurotoxins that affect organisms that ingest it including organisms up the food chain (red tide)
How are organisms in this kingdom helpful and harmful to humans? Pt2
Fungus helpful- produce oxygen for aerobic organisms and they play an important role in nutrient recycling.
Fungus harmful- cause severe diseases to humans and protozoans and cause harmful diseases to crops that organisms including humans need to survive.
