Diversity of living things Flashcards
What concepts are used to define a species?
Morphological, biological and phylogenetic
How many names species are there?
Approx 1.7 million
Morphological (adv and disadv)
Based on appearance
Adv: simple
Disadv: may appear same but are diff species
Biological
Based on behaviour and ability to produce fertile offspring
Adv: widely accepted
Dis: doesn’t work for extinct or separated species
Phylogenetic
Based on evolution of groups of organisms
Adv: can be used for extinct species
Dis: revolutionary histories aren’t always known
What is the word for the scientific method for naming species
Binomial nomenclature
What is taxonomy?
A branch of biology that identifies, names and classifies species
Who is binomial nomenclature developed by?
Carl Linnaeus
What do the first and second word of a species name mean
1st: GENUS - indicates a group of similar species; first letter always capitalized
2nd: SPECIES - indicates a kind of organism; description of genus, not capitalized
What makes a living thing?
- It has cells 2. It grows 3. Requires water 4. All reproduce 5. Have DNA 6. Made of carbon 7. Need nutrients 8. Metabolism 9. Response to environment
How to determine if species are related?
Anatomical (analyzing physical structures), physiological (analyzing the biochemical functioning of organisms), DNA (more common genes, more closely related)
What is a gene pool?
The variety of different genes in the same interbreeding population
What is ecosystem resilience?
The capacity of an ecosystem to respond to disturbance by resisting damage and recovering quickly.
