Kingdom Fungi Flashcards

1
Q

Fungi structure

A

-unicellular or multicellular
-network of filaments make up the body(hyphae)
-Branching network of hyphae(mycellum)
-Divisions of hyphae(septum)
-Cap and stalk
-Cell wall made of chitin

Q

Mode of nutrition for fungi

A

-Heterotrophs
-absorb food
-extracellular digestion: enzymes digest food externally, and is absorbed into fungus by hyphae

Q

mode of reproduction

A

Fragmentation(asexual): pieces of hyphae break off and grow into new hyphae

Spores(sexually): wind blown reproduction structures like pollen. Spores can make multiple copies of themselves(asexual)

Q

Major phyla for fungi

A
  • Zygomycotes: Bread and fruit mold, parasites of insects. Bread mold takes food and nutrients from bread and damages its surface. Grows better on whole wheat bread since it has more protiens

-Basidiomycotes: lawn mushrooms, decomposers

-Ascomycotes: mildews, truffles, yeast, some cause plants diseases

-Deuteromycotes: imperfect fungi, produce spores called conidia

Importance of Fungi

A
  • decomposes
  • industrial/economic benefits(alchohal, food, bread)
-destruction of food, lumber, paper and cloth

Q

What is Penicilum?

A

-Fungus used to produce antibiotic penicillin
-kills bacteria by interfering with their ability to build cell walls
-bacteria have become mostly immune to penicillin

A

specialized cells that feed on living cells. Cause diseases like athletes foot and ringworm.

Q

What is ringworm?

A
  • A clinical condition caused by fungal infection on the skin.
  • Fungi that causes ringworm feeds on keratin which is found on our skin nails and hair.
  • Thrive on skin that is moist and warm

Q

what is mycorrhiza?l

A

when hyphae grows around plants and animals.

-Hyphae absorbs minerals from soil and feeds it to plants roots

  • Increasees the plants roots surface area, and in return fungi get fed food and sugars during photosynthesis

Q

What are Lichens?

A
  • Pale moss which grows on trees or rocks.
  • Symbiotic relationship between fungi and cyanobacteria
  • The fungus provided water and nutrients for the bacteria and in rerun the fungus receives food made through photosynthesis
