Biodiversity Flashcards
Biodiversity
variety of life forms in the world
species
a group who’s members are able to freely breed among themselves
Hybridization
the cross breeding of 2 different species
morphology
the physical appearance and characteristics of an organism
Individual variability
individuals of a species may show subtle differences due to genetic diversity
Evolutionary change
a change that occurs in an entire population over long periods of time.
Genetic diversity
the sum of all the different forms of genes present in a particular species.
Diversity in ecosystems
ecosystems are made up of many differnt species and their physical environment
heterotrophs
organisms that obtain nutrients by consuming living or dead organisms(cannot make their own food)
autotrophs
organisms that are able to make their own food from nutrients
species diversity
describes the variety of species in an ecosystem and the number of individuals within those species
ecosystem diversity
diverse range of habitats, and organisms, that live in the habitats and their relationships that connect them
high biodiversity
environment is healthier and more resilient to change
keystone species
a species that have a disproportionately large effect on the ecosystem in which they live
loss of biodiversity
threatens food supply, eliminates sources of natural medicines, economic impacts on tourism
