What are some characteristics of phylum Rotifera?
- microscopic animal
- a cylindrical or vase shaped body with a crown of cilia on head
- complete digestive tract (straight with 2 openings)
- invertebrates
- bilateral symmetry
- some sessile and others free moving
- has head (mouth and cilia), trunk, for (tapering portion)
- muscular activity coordinated by nervous system found in brain
- don’t have distinct cells
- all have 100 nuclei
- has excretory system
- withstand drying
How does phylum Rotifera move?
The cilia moves in wheel like motion and the toes expand and contract to move the body forward.
What is the food source for phylum Rotifera?
Protozoans and microscopic algae
What is the environment of phylum Rotifera?
Aquatic
What are some common representatives of phylum Rotifera?
Philodina and epiphanes
What is the life cycle of phylum Rotifera?
- sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction
- produce female eggs which unfertilized become males
What is the importance to humans for phylum Rotifera?
- help to decompose algae and dead bacteria
- food to animals that we eat
How complex is phylum Rotifera?
Moderate complex
What is the nearest relative to phylum Rotifera?
Platyhelminthes (flatworms)
What is the difference between male female phylum Rotifera?
Females are diploid and males are haploid
Pori
Porus, passage, pore
Fera
Ferre, bearing, to carry
What are some characteristics of phylum Porifera?
- lack bones, brain, heart, blood, eyes, ears, teeth, and joints
- stays firmly in one place but have flagella to move water in and out (sessile)
- cellular level of organization
- eat with collar cells and amebocytes
- symbiotic relationship with plants and mobile animals
- several different shapes, sizes, and colors
- more than 10,000 different species
- often live in large, joining colonies
