Kinetics Flashcards
Rate of reaction definition
Change in amount /concentration of a reactant of product per unit of time
What are the two things required for a particle to collide?
- Activation energy= minimum amount of energy required for a reaction to occur
- Collide in the right direction.
What does the Maxwell Distribution distribution show?
The kinetic energy in gas molecules
Why does the graph start at 0,0?
No particles have zero kinetic energy
What is the area under the curve equal to?
Total number of molecules
Draw the Maxwell Distribution distribution curve
What does the peak show?
Most probable energy gas particles have
What is on the Y axis?
Number of molecules
What is on the X axis?
Kinetic energy
What is on the right of the peak?
Mean energy particles will have
What does the dotted line show?
Activation energy. Particles with energy greater than activation energy can react.
How does increase temperature affect Maxwell Distribution curve
The peak will shift to the right and go lower
More particles will have energy greater than activation energy
What does decreased temperature do to the Maxwell Distribution curve
The peak increases and shift to the left
Less energy greater than activation energy
Why does temperature increase rate of reaction?
Increase temperature increases kinetic energy of particles so more frequent successful collisions happen per given time
How does pressure and concentration affect rate ?
In increasing pressure will increase the rate of reaction as particles will be more close together so more frequent successful collisions which means a higher chance of a reaction. Same with concentration.
How does catalyst increase rate of reaction?
Catalyst increase weight of reaction by providing an alternative pathway as lower activation energy
The dotted line is moved far to the left on the Maxwell Distribution curve
Units for rate of reaction
Mol dm-3 s-1
Three ways rate can be measured
- How long it takes for precipitate to form ( disappearing cross diagram ) shut
- Measure volume of gas produced.( gas syringe )
- Amount of mass lost
