Equilibrium Flashcards
Dynamic equilibrium definition
Rate of forward reaction is equal and the concentration of each substance is constant. In a close system.
La chatliers principle
If a reaction at equilibrium a change to pressure temperature or concentration position of equilibrium will counteract the change
Change in concentration
Equilibrium will shift it the opposite way to oppose the increase or decrease in temperature
Change in pressure( increase )
Equilibrium shift it to the side with fewer moles to oppose the increase in pressure
Change in temperature- -ve
Forward reaction is exothermic
Increase in temperature means equilibrium shift to the left-hand side to oppose the increase in temperature
Exothermic reaction( fire )
Reactants = cold
Products = hot
Endothermic reaction (+ve)
Reactants = hot
Products = cold
Effect of catalyst
No effect as forward and backward reactions increase equally by the same amount to reach dynamic equilibrium faster
Kc
At equilibrium
Products / reactants
Square brackets
Number in front = power
Units = mol dm-3
Units = powers of reactants - powers of products
What factor effects kc
Temperature as only valid fir one temperature
