Kinetic Particle Theory Flashcards
Why does solid have a fixed shape?
Solid Particles are
-closely packed in a orderly manner
-held together by very strong forces of attraction
-have enough kinetic energy to only vibrate and rotate about fixed positions
-cannot move around freely
Why solid have fixed volume?
cannot be compressed as its particles are already very close to one another
Liquid why no fixed shape?
particles are:
arranged in disorderly manner
weaker forces of attraction than solid particles
have more kinetic energy than particles of the same substance in solid state
can move freely throughout liquid
why liquid fixed vol?
particles are still packed quite closely together
liquid cannot be compressed and have fixed volume
why gas not have fixed shape?
gas particles:
spread far apart from one another
weaker forces of attraction
a lot of KE, not held in positions
why gas no fixed volume
particles of gas a lot more space between them compared to solid and liquid
particles can be forced to move closer together
Diffusion takes place in
gas, liquid
Particles when change in state of matter COLD
FREEZING
energy given out by liquid particles
particles lose KE and move slowly
when temp low, particles no longer have enough energy to move freely
start to settle in fixed positions
all particles settled down
Particles when change in state of matter HOT
BOILING
HE absorbed by liquid particles
HE converted to KE
particles start to move faster as temp rises
when temp is high enough, particles enough KE to overcome FORCES of ATTRACTION holding them together
particles spread far apart, substance now a gas
What is DIFFUSION?
movement of particles from a region of higher conc to a region of lower conc
2 FACTORS that affect rate of DIFFUSION
- TEMPERATURE
- MOLECULAR MASS
what is mass?
substance that occupies space and has mass
what does the kinetic particle theory states?
all matter is made up of tiny particles & are in continuous random motion
