Hobbes- original sin, children are born sinful
Rousseau- children are inherently good but society corrupts them
Locke- children are blank slates when born
Kant- born with mental structures but develop interaction w environment
Freud- the unconscious child
Piaget- the naturally developing child
What should be considered when researching with children?
Language use- kids can communicate but just differently
Setting- consider bias and power in schools and clinics
Analysis- don’t impose researchers view
Quality of data- trust kids accounts
Ethical concerns- engage w kids appropriately
Research techniques- child centered questionnaires, can use images, timeline exercises, life grids, drawings, vignettes
What are the Guidelines on child-friendly health?
Children have a right to healthcare
There is a need to respect and protect their rights
Their views should be taken into account in all decisions affecting them
How was dental anxiety managed?
Inhalation sedation and general anaesthesia
But these don’t help and it’s v expensive

Talking therapy
Helps people address unhelpful thinking patterns and ways of responding
Can treat depression, anxiety and phobias

What does the ‘Your teeth, you are in control’ guide promote?
1. Challenge unhelpful thoughts ~normalise dental anxiety, provide info 2. Enhance control ~message to the dentist form(assess severity of anxiety) and stop signal contract (way for child to stop dentist) 3. Reflect and plan reward
