Kidney Function and anatomy Flashcards
1
Q
How does blood enter kidney?
A
- Blood comes in through the renal artery
- Cells in the body produce waste products or change up the acidity or the osmolality of the blood.
2
Q
How does blood leave the kidney?
A
- Filtrate is collected into renal vein
- Take returned/reabsorbed nutrients back into the blood
3
Q
Filtration
A
- Takes blood and filters it
- Waste products, important nutrients (ions, amino acids, glucose) end up in filtrate that passes through kidney
4
Q
Collection
A
- Takes blood and puts put urine
urine is present in the renal calyx (renal pelvis is where renal calyses meet) - Ureters send urine away from the kidney into bladder
5
Q
How do kidneys maintain homeostasis?
A
- Maintain pH of blood by regulating the amount of hydrogen ions that are available
- Blood pressure- kidneys make sure the right amount of sodium and chloride ions are excreted to prevent high blood pressure
- Osmolality- concentration of dissolved particles of chemicals and minerals
- Excretion of waste- (urea)
