Keywords 7 - Output Devices Flashcards
Peripheral
An external device that is connected to a computer
Soft copy
Virtual data and information
Hard copy
Physical data and information
Footprint
The space taken up by a peripheral
Pixel
Means “picture element”; an illuminated dot - many pixels together form a display
Resolution
The number of pixels in a display
DPI (Dots Per Inch)
Resolution is measured in dots per inch (DPI)
CAD (Computer Aided Design)
Software that allows a user to design and create an image of an object
CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing)
A computer controls machinery used to manufacture an object
CNC (Computer Numeric Control)
CAM uses CNC to controls the machinery to achieve precision manufacturing
DAC (Digital to Analogue Convertor)
A device that converts digital signals to analogue signals
Flat panel display
Provides high resolution, bright, flicker-free displays
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)
Provides a low energy display made up of separate red, green and blue coloured crystals arranged together in tiny blocks
LED (Light Emitting Diode) display
A more advanced version of a LCD display - pixels are backlit with LEDs
LCD projector
Light is passed through 3 separate glass panels (red, green and blue) - for each pixel appropriate colours are blocked or open
DLP projector
Millions of tiny mirrors are used to reflect light on to the projection lens.
Inkjet printer
Cheap but low quality printing for home use. Ink is sprayed on to the paper with many nozzles.
Laser printer
Expensive but high quality printing for commercial use. A powder called toner is used to print the image.
3D printer
CAD files are used to create 3D objects, created from many very thin horizontal layers. Polymers, acrylic or plastic are used to create the object, one layer at a time from the bottom.
2D CAM machine
A 2D cutting machine e.g. laser cutter, blade cutter (e.g. vinyl cutter) or water jet cutter
3D CAM machine
3D cutters cut a 3D object from materials such as wood, MDF, wax, plastic and acrylic. The end result is similar to 3D printing but created in a different way.
Speaker
Output device to output sound
Actuator
A mechanical output device that produces movement. Actuators can rotate, open, close, push and pull an object.
Headphone
Output device to output sound without disturbing other people
