Key Words - Resource Management Flashcards
resource
a stock or supply of something that has a value or a purpose
the three most important resources are food, water and energy
undernutrition (malnutrition)
when people don’t eat enough nutrients to cover their needs for energy and growth, or to maintain a healthy immune system
this can result in a range of illnesses and diseases
food miles
the distance covered supplying food to consumers
carbon footprint
measurement of the greenhouse gases individuals produce, through the burning of fossil fuels
organic produce
grown without the use of chemicals, such as fertilisers and pesticides
water surplus
an area where the water supply exceeds (is greater than) the demand
water deficit
an area where the water demand exceeds (is greater than) supply
water stress
when the demand for water exceeds supply in a certain period or when poor quality restricts its use
grey water
recycled domestic waste water
water transfer
matching supply with demand by moving water from an area with water surplus to another with water deficit
energy conservation
reducing energy consumption by using less energy and existing sources more efficiently
energy security
uninterrupted availability of energy sources at an affordable price
fracking
the process of using high pressure liquids (water, sand and chemicals) to fracture shale rocks in the ground
this releases the reserves of natural gas
