Deforestation
The clearing of trees, transforming a forest into cleared land.
Subsistence Farming / Fishing
Producing only for yourself and for your family.
Commercial Farming / Fishing
Producing goods for selling or trading with other people.
Soil Erosion
Where water or wind removes the top layer of the ground.
Made worse by deforestation.
Selective Logging
Where only the trees that are required are cut down, and the rest are left standing.
Indigenous Tribes
The original people who lived in an area.
Often forced out by increased development of an area.
Debt Reduction
Where poorer countries are given the chance to pay off some of what they owe to richer countries by protecting an important ecosystem.
Ecotourism
Where people come to visit an area but it doesn’t damage the environment or the local people.
Polar Environment
Very cold areas in the centre of some continents.
Ground is partly or completely covered by ice caps.
Tundra Environment
Cold areas on the edge of ice caps.
Ground is permanently frozen, meaning there are no large plants, only small shrubs.
Permafrost
Permanently frozen ground.
Infrastructure
The network of roads and communications (phones/ internet) that link a place to other places.
