touch, pain, vibration, temperature, pressure, proprioception, stretch, chemical changes & visceral irritation, nausea & hunger
Define the term ‘proprioception’
perception governed by proprioceptors, as awareness of the position of one’s body.
What are special senses?
hearing, vision, balance, smell & taste
What are hormones?
A regulatory substance produced in an organism and transported in tissue fluids such as blood to stimulate specific cells or tissues into action.
What information do afferent neurones carry?
Afferent neurones (also known as sensory neurons or afferent nerve fibers) are pathways that carry sensory information from the body to the central nervous system
What information do efferent neurones carry?
Efferent Neurons (also known as efferent nerve fibers) are conducting cells that carry information from the CNS to muscles and organs throughout the body.
Define the term ‘homeostasis’
The ability of a living organism to keep the conditions inside it the same despite any changes in the conditions around it, or this state of internal balance
What is senescence?
The process of deterioration with age –> the loss of a cell’s power of division and growth.
Define the term ‘obesity’
The state of being grossly fat or overweight.
What are erythocytes?
Red blood cells
