Key Words Flashcards
Evapotranspiration
Water lost from vegetation via both evaporation and transpiration.
Interception
Plants prevent rainfall from directly reaching the ground.
Precipitation
Most important input in the system, in the form of snow, rain etc..
Infiltration
The downward entry of water that seeps into the soil or a porous rock.
Percolation
Downward movement of water through the soil or underlying rock. Thai the collects as groundwater.
Through flow
Movement of water within soil sideways towards the river.
Groundwater flow
Lateral (sideways) movement of groundwater from the water table.
Water table
The level of saturated groundwater in the soil which rises and falls dependant on rain.
Channel flow
Downhill movement of water in rivers.
Surface run off
Water flowing across the surface of the land, whether in a channel or over land.
Aquifer
Underground layers of water bearing permeable rock from which groundwater can be extracted.
Bluewater flow
Visible part of the system which can be available.
Green water flow
Involves either the interception or the transpiration of water by vegetation.
