Factors That Affect Water Supply Flashcards
Climate: pressures
High pressure - as air sinks high pressure is created which is accompanied by dry weather.
Low pressure - as air rises low pressure is created bringing wet weather.
Climate: precipitation
Tropical regions receive the most rainfall and temperate regions are wet.
Sub tropics and polar regions are arid and semi arid.
Other factors modifying rainfall: El Niño and La Niña
El Niño - will decrease precipitation over northern Australia and increase over South America.
La Niña - more rain over Australia and decrease over South America.
River systems:
Worlds major rivers store large quantities of water and transfer it across continents.
Most river systems are linked to a drainage basin this will collect precipitation that falls in there and channel it towards the ocean.
Geology
Water is stored in porous rock, the water table marks the surface of this.
Granite and other metamorphic rock is impermeable and so can’t store water (aquicludes)
