Key Words 18 Flashcards
glycolysis
happens in the cytoplasm
doesnt requitre oxygen
product is two 3Cpyruvate
uses two ATP makes 4 ATP and 2NADH
substrate level phosphorylation
making ATP without an ETC.
ATP made by transferring a phosphate group from a phosphorylated intermediate to ADP
outer mitochondrial membrane
separates the contents of the mitochondrion from the rest of the cell making a cellular compartment with ideal conditions for aerobic respiration
intermembrane space
proteins are pumped into here by the ETC, this space is small and the concentrations builds up quickly
cristae
projections of the inner membrane with increase the SA available for oxidative phosphorylation
inner mitochondrial membrane
contains ETC and ATP synthase
matrix
contains enzymes for the krebs cycle and the link reaction also contains mitochondria DNA
oxidative phosphorylation
the formation of ATP from ADP,its dependant on electrons moving along the ETC and requires the presence of oxygen
occurs along the ETC which involves a series of membrane bond complexes
Substrate level phosphorylation
making ATP, involving the transfer of a phosphate group from a short lived highly reactive intermediate like creatine phosphate
Obigate anerobes
Cant survive in the presence of oxygen
Almost all are prokaryotes eg Clostridium that causes food poisoning
Facultative anerobes
Make ATP by aerobic respiration if oxygen present
Can switch to anaerobic when there’s no oxygen, like yeast
Obligate aerobes
Can only make ATP in the presence of oxygen.
However individual cells within the mammal eg their muscle cells, can be described as facultative anerobes
Cuz they can add to their ATp byusing anaerobic as well as aerobic when o2 con low.
Only for short period of timer
Makes compounds that have to be broken down where o2 present again. Whole organism is obligate though
Fermentation
A form of anerobicnrespiration
Complex organic compounds broken into simple inorganic compounds without the use of oxygen or the etc
