Key Vocabulary Flashcards
Aerobic
Relating to, involving, or requiring free oxygen
Anaerobic
Relating to or requiring an absence of free oxygen
Enzyme
A substance produced by a living organism which acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction
Glycolysis
Breakdown of glucose; may be anaerobic or aerobic
Glycogenesis
Process by which glycogen is synthesized from glucose to be stored in the liver
Glycogenolysis
Process by which glycogen is broken into glucose-1-phosphate to be used by muscles
Lipolysis
Breakdown of triglycerides into glycerol and free fatty acids (FFAs)
B-oxidation
The process of breaking down FFA to acetyl CoA
Oxidation
The process in which a chemical substance changes because of the addition of oxygen
Phosphorylation
The addition of a phosphoryl (PO3) group to a molecule. In biological systems, this reaction is vital for the cellular storage and transfer of free energy using energy carrier molecules.
