urbanisation
the increase in the population of the worlds population who live in cities
migration
the movement of a person from one place to another, involving a permanent move of home for over a year
natural increase
natural population increase caused when the birth rate is higher than the death rate
CBD
central business district
brown field
a previously developed piece of land now available for redevelopment
green field
an undeveloped piece of land with proposed first time development
squatter settlements
areas of cities (usually on the out skirts but not always) built (illegally) by people of any materials they can find. also can be know as shanty towns
informal sector
jobs created by people but no recognised officially
mega city
urban areas with population in excess of 10 million people
sustainability
looking after the needs of today without reducing opportunities for the future
sustainable city
will use less resources and produce less than an unsustainable city
urban ecological footprint
the amount of land needed to sustain the cities population and absorb waste (will grow along with the city)
green belt
land on the edge of a built up area where restrictions are in place on building. to prevent the outward expansion of towns and cities to protect the environment
urban sprawl
the uncontrolled outward expansion of the building up of a town, it is stopped by green belts
