The 12 main followers of Jesus who helped spread his message
Missionaries
People who spread the Christian faith, mainly travel to do so
Persecution
Discrimination against a group of people who share an aspect of identity
Gentiles
A name given to non-Jews in the Bible
Martyred
The word ‘martyr’ comes from the Greek word meaning ‘witness’. It is when a person is killed for their beliefs
Scapegoat
A term used when deliberately placing the blame of an action on person/group of people
Confessional
A booth where catholics ask a priest to grant them Gods forgiveness for their sins. (Absorbed of your sins)
Eucharist
The practice of eating bread and wine during a church service to remember Jesus’ death and resurrection. Derived from the Greek work ‘eucharista’ to mean ‘thanksgiving’

Officially kicked out of the Catholic Church
Indulgences
Certificates bought from the Catholic Church so they could spend less time in purgatory
Protestantism
A form of Christianity that began in the 16th century as a protest against the Catholic Church
Reformation
A 16th century movement to reform the church resulting in the division of the western church into Catholicism and Protestantism. Was led by Martin Luther
Penance
Prayer for some action to show that one is sorry for committing a sin
Transubstantiation
The belief that bread and wine becomes the actual body and blood of Jesus during the Eucharist
Heresy
Beliefs that are opposed to the core beliefs of the church

Religious texts, such as the Bible
