Carbohydrates
The sugars starches and fibres found in fruit, grains, vegetables and milk products. They are a source of energy and a macronutrient
Diet
The food we eat and the fluids we drink on a daily basis
Energy
The energy released from carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
Energy-dense foods
The foods high in kilojoules or energy
Fat
A lipid and a macronutrient. It is a source of fuel which the body breaks down and uses for energy.
Fortified foods
Have had nutrients added to them that they would not normally contain
Kilojoules
A unit of measurement that indicates how much energy a food or drink provides. 1 kJ = 24
Nutrient dense foods
Foods high in nutrients
Nutrients
Chemicals in food which the body absorbs and utilises to function effectively
Nutrition
The study of food and how it works in the body
Nutrient-poor
Refers to foods that are low in many nutrients and often high in fat, salt and sugar
Macronutrients
Required in the body in large amounts. Carbohydrates, protein, and fat.
Micronutrients
Nutrients required in the body in small amounts. Vitamins and Minerals
Minerals
Needed in the body to grow and function effectively. They are absorbed by plants and the soil they are grown in and consumed by animals when they eat plants.
Protein
A macronutrient made up of amino acids. Helps to repair, maintain and build all types of body tissue. (e.g. skin, teeth, hair and bones.) All foods from animal sources contain protein. It is also found in some plant foods such as nuts and legumes
