Key terms Flashcards
Coding?
format in which memory is stored
Capacity?
amount of information that can be held in the memory store
Duration?
length of time information is stored
STM?
limited capacity memory store
LTM?
permanent memory store, coding is semantic, has unlimited capacity and can store memories for a lifetime
Interference?
forgetting because one memory blocks another, causing one or both memories to be distorted or forgotten
Proactive interference?
forgetting occurs when older memories disrupt the recall of newer memories
Retroactive interference?
forgetting occurs when newer memories disrupt the recall of older memories
Retrieval failure?
occurs when we don’t have the necessary cues to access memory
Cue?
a trigger of information that allows us to access a memory
Eyewitness testimony?
ability of people to remember the details of events like accidents/crimes
Misleading information?
incorrect information given to the eyewitness usually after the event
Leading question?
questions which due to the way they are phrased suggest a certain answer
Post-event discussion?
occurs when there is more than one witness to an event
