Formal thought disorder
Disorganised thinking as evidenced in speech
Delusions
Belief held in spite of superior evidence to the contrary
Compulsions
Repeitive and stereotyped behaviours, seemingly purposeful
Flight of ideas
Stream of accelerated thoughts which jump rapidly from topic to topic - aimless with no clear direction
Neologisms
Coining of new words which are only understood by the patient
Logoclonia
Patient repeats the last syllable of a word or phrase
Obsessions
Repetitive and senseless thoughts or behaviours that are recognised as irrational by the patient but which they are unable to resist
Monomania
Preoccupation with a single subject to pathological degree
Echopraxia
Patient imitates another persons movements, automatic process
Depressive retardation
Psychomotor retardation associated with low mood. Thoughts, speech and movement become slowed.
Stupor
Patients are unable to speak or move but remain fully conscious. Severe form of depressive retardation.
Congruent
Any symptoms are considered mood-congruent when they are in agreement with the patients current mood
Euthymic
Normal, tranquil mental state or mood
Circumstantiality
Patient moves onto different topics but there is a train of thought that can be followed. Eventually return to original topic
Derailment
Converation moves randomly from one topic to another
