What is a subcontractor’s responsibility and who do they report to?
A subcontractor is responsible for their package of work or construction discipline.
Can only be instructed by the main contractor as they have no contractual link.
What is a site supervisor and what is their role?
A site supervisor is the general foreman.
On smaller projects they are the main point of contact for all trades
On larger projects who is the main point of contact for all trades?
The construction manager
What is a trade supervisor?
A trade supervisor is normally the foreman or lead person for each subcontractor
typically an experienced trades person with many years of experience
What is a bricklayer?
Builds brick and block work walls with different finishes
What is a joiner?
Carries out various tasks inc studwalls internal doors etc
What is a plasterer?
Applies wet plaster and finishes or provides dry-lined walls with specialist taped joints
What is a tiler?
A tiler is a finishing trade responsible for tiled finishes
What is an electrician?
An electrician is responsible for installation of all electrical wiring including any wiring containment systems or specialist alarms.
On larger projects an electrician is responsible for low voltage wiring e.g. fire and security systems
What is a heating and ventilation engineer (H&V)
Carries out plumbing and heating installation works.
Normally in steel as a plumber works in copper
What is an air conditioning and refrigeration engineer?
Closely linked to the electrical trades although carry out some pipework installation
they must be aware of refrigeration legislation as certain gases are banned in the UK
What is a gas fitter?
Is a specialist qualified to work on gas and combustion equipment installs such as boilers.
Must be registered as gas safe which is a competent person scheme.
What is a decorator?
Finishing trade responsible for decorated finishes
What is a ground worker?
Manual worker associated with leveling ground for substructure and foundation works
Usually supported by different earth-moving equipment
