What is a building control inspector? (BCO)
Every site must meet the building act 1984. This is enforced by the building control department of a local authority.
The BCO has the power to give or deny approval of works regarding construction and layout that affect a building.
What is document P or ‘Part P’
refers to electrical installation

A water inspector enforces the water supply (Water fittings) regulations 1998
Water inspectors have statutory powers to improvise improvement orders or withdraw someone from a water supply

An HSE inspector is an officer of the HSE
Have the right to enter the work place without notice although typically will make an appointment
Typically would look at workplace activities, methods and procedures used in management of health and safety law.
Empowered to talk to employees and their representatives, take photos and samples

Informal warning
Improvement notice
Prohibition notice
Prosecution
What is an informal warning from the HSE?
An informal warning comes with a minor breach of health and safety
Inspectors can communicate best practices and legal requirements to the duty holder
What is an improvement notice from the HSE?
An improvement notice comes after a more serious breach from the HSE
The notice will say what amendments need to be made and give reasons as to why and when it has to be corrected
They will then take further action if these actions have not been met
What can the duty holder do if they feel that the HSE’s findings are unfair?
A duty holder can appeal to an industrial tribunal
What is a prohibition notice from the HSE?
A prohibition notice is when there is a risk of a serious injury.
The inspector is empowered to stop the activity immediately or after a determined period of time
once this has been applied the activity cannot be continued until remedial action is taken
What is prosecution from the HSE? What size of financial or imprisonment punishment can be given by the HSE?
The inspector may consider prosecution in certain circumstances to punish and deter from more accidents to come
The HSE can impose unlimited fines and imprisonment
What is an electrical services inspector?
They are rarely used in the UK as systems are certified by level 3 electricians
