key question Flashcards
what is the biological key question?
what are the implications for society if aggression is found to be cause by nature and not nurture?
what does aggression being down to nature or nurture refer to?
- caused by an individuals biology and genetic makeup rather than “nurture” which concerns a persons environment that they are surrounded by.
is there a choice in the matter if aggression is found to be due to environment (nurture)
- some might say yes and you can choose not to behave in that way.
- For example, they could choose to
avoid environments that are likely to trigger aggressive behaviour or choosing not to act in an aggressive way.
what might be said if aggressive behaviour is found to be to do with nature, regarding choice?
if a
behaviour comes from someone’s nature, there is not such an element of choice. We cannot help
our biology and perhaps should not be blamed for behaviour stemming from our biology.
what might people who are aggressive because of their nature be blamed for, if not the innate aggressive behaviour itself
- if we are born aggressive than we should be blamed for the inability to control it
what is the implication?
The implication is that, if we should not be blamed if aggression comes from our nature, then using
imprisonment to prevent aggression might not be ethical.
is prison is a punishment then what is the question that should be asked on society?
the
question for society is whether someone should be punished for something they cannot help doing.
This is a moral issue for society.
examples of things that get treated in this country but aggression is not?
- anxiety and depression get attention and our treated
- aggression however is punished.
what are the list of implications on society?
- Can people be found criminally responsible?
• Would punishment be unfair as someone’s
biological make up is beyond their control?
• Maybe then people should be helped not
punished?
• Societies views may change – aggression might
be seen as a form of illness or symptom of a
disorder?
• Maybe a person could be identified before they
show aggressive behaviour? But what would we
then do with them?
how may Hormones provide an answer to this question on whether agression is due to nature or nurture?
- it is an androgen (hormone which develops)
- low levels of cortisol and high levels of testosterone cause aggression
- males are exposed to higher levels of testosterone than females, this explains why males might behave aggressively
- implication: should the be responsible? yes because no every male is a criminal or is aggressive suggesting that althought testosterone can cause aggression this aggression can be controlled.
genes ?
- MAOA gene causes aggressive behaviour
- nature
- however epigenetics suggest that certain genes only become active after being triggered by the environment and such as sexual abuse for e.g.
- this would be nurture
- implications = is the person about of the negative life event to blame or if it is genes should we identify this at birth and ensure preventative care
The brain?
- Charles Whitman had a tumor resting on his Amgdala which caused him to become agressive and kill 18 people on the columbia uni building
- was that his fault
