what was the aim of the study
research into whether schizophrenia could be inherited from the mother to the child.
what time period were the participants born in to schizophrenic mothers ?
1915-1945
what were reasons for the children being selected?
- had to of been put up for adoption
mothers had to either (a)- have a diagnosis of SC (b)- display behaviour consistent with SC (c)- no diseases (d)- that the child and mother were separated at birth.
how many children satisfied theses conditions?
74
where both parents psychiatric reccord checked?
no, the Fathers wasnt, just the mothers, however none were known to be hospital paitents.
how many ptps dropped out of the study?
16
how many ptps were left after the drop outs?

what design was used?
matched pairs, the ptps were matched on sex, type of eventual placement and length of time in child car
how many controls were used?
50 - 33 males 17 females
what was used to check the psychiatric status after follow up?
- police records
- school reports
- civil and criminal court actions
- relatives, friends and employers were contacted
who evaluated the documents/ information found on each participant?
two psychiatrists did blindly and independently and a third evaluation was made by Heston himself.
when was a diagnosis of schizophrenia given?
if all three psychiatrists agreed as well as being diagnosed by the hospital.
what were the participants scored on?
- psycho social disability, they were given a score between 1-100 (100 being highest)
what was the % of schizophrenic mothers with schizophrenic children?
10.6%
what was the % of schizophrenia in non-schizophrenic mothers?
0%
