what three principles does Freud suggest to be appart of out personalilty?
- ID
- EGO
- SUPEREGO
what is the ID?
- the pleasure principle
- irrational does not care about other only wishes to satisfy its own desires
- present from birth
what is the SUPEREGO?
- morality principle
- develops at about age 5
- formed from experiences with authority e.g. parents
- punishes with guilt and rewards with pride.
what is the EGO?
- reality principle
- develops at age 3
- its aware of the demands of the ego and superego and tried to balance them out
- makes decisions.
what is meant by the eros?
focus on the preservation of enjoyment of life
what is Thanatos?
focus on the drive towards death and destruction
what is meant by repression?
ensuring unconcious thoughts are never allowed into the concious.
what is catharsis?
in simple terms it means the release of emotional energy
- sexual/ aggressive urgers being releaved through the release of sexual/agressive energy.
why is catharsis necesary?
- because it prevent built up tension causing violent impulses.
what is the hydraulic model ?
- it suggests that if too much emotional energy is built up, this cause a build up of mental energy which if it isnt released can lead to mental health problems,
what evidence supports catharsis?
Hokanson 1974 showed that behaving in an agressive way reduced tensions of an individual.
what is the biggest weakness of freud?
it lacks scientific credibility as it cant be physically proven - and it can not be falsified.
