A

Why might we expect the media to have an effect on anorexics?

A
  • Socio cultural factors are commonly associated with an anorexic, as it more prevalent in industrialised societites (UK, USA, Austalia etc) the ideal of attractiveness being linked to slimness is promoted through media.
    95% of people own a tv set and watch on average 3-4 hours a day

What is the damaging paradox?

A

In the case of social media and anorexia, it means that while social media can make body image problems worse by showing unrealistic beauty standards, it can also help by providing support, encouragement, and information for recovery. So, it can be both harmful and helpful at once

How can social learning theory explain the key learning question?

A
  • Attention- Media- photos of skinny models
  • Retention- Repeated exposire and mental rehearsal
  • Reproduction- Low self esteem, high self efficacy
  • Motivation- Vicarious learning internal and external reinforcement.
  • Vicarious reinforcement/ punishement- Mothers who complain about their weight are more liekly to have children with weight concerns

How can operant conditioning theory explain the key learning question?

A

When people lose eight they are complimented (positive reinforcment) and this conditions them into losing more weight
If people gain weight they are criticised (punishment) or the compliments stop (negative reinforcement)
