Capafons et al Flashcards
What are the aims of Capafons et al study?
To assess the effectiveness of SD in the treatment of fear of flying.
To see whether fear of flying reduced spontaneously without treatment.
To demonstrate that SD remains comparable in effectiveness with newer therapies
What type of experiment was Capafons et al study?
Experimental
Independent Groups design
What was the independent varibale in Capafons et al study?
Treatment/ no treatment
What was the dependent variable in Capafons et al study?
Fear of flying measured in a numerous of ways including the fear of flying scale and the scales of expectations of danger and anxiety
What was another way they measure fear of flying not using scales in Capafons et al study?
Muscle tension
Heart rate
How many ppts were there in Capafons et al study?
24 females and 17 males
What were the 2 occasions where ppts were assessed on their fear of flying in Capafons et al study?
- Completing anxiety scales
- Physiological measurements
What did they do in the physiological measurements in Capafons et al study?
Watched a film of flight in an armchair exactly 1.8m from the screen
How many treatments did ppts have over 2 weeks in Capafons et al study?
12-15 1 hour sessions
What percentage in the treatment group had a significant reduction in symptons?
90%
What was the procedure of capafons?
They used 41 participants who volunteered from an advert for the treatment. 21 were assigned to the control group (12 females and 9 males) and 20 were assigned to treatment group (12 females and 8 males). They were matched on age, sex, self reported fear level and some psychophysiological measures. Ppts were interviewed to complete a self-report measures of dependent variables 1 and 2 -Ppts were later called back to watch the simulation of flying from packing a suitcase to touching down ⁃ The ppts physiological responses were measured for 3mins before being shown the video -They then watched the video Room temp remained at 22.5 degrees and distance from the screen was 1.8m ⁃ Their physiological responses were measured during this time ⁃ over 8 weeks Ppts had 2 one hour sessions per week - Ist phase: relaxation training of breathing (4 sessions) ⁃ 2nd phase: going through hierarchy (2 sessions) ⁃ 3rd phase: applying it (3-5 sessions) Control group ⁃ Received no treatment yet ⁃ 2 in vivo flights (out and return) ⁃ The first flight took place 7 days after treatment -Recordings of heart rate, palm temp and muscular tension were recorded during take off.
What are the results and conclusions of capafons?
There was a significant improvement in the treatment groups scores on physiological measures post treatment. There was several significant reductions in fear e.g fear during flight reduced from 25.6 to 13.3 and catastrophic thoughts reduced from 10.3 to 5.0 There was no significant difference in scores between the two times for the control group. One person in the control group showed improvement, and 2 people from the treatment group did not show a significant reduction. Therefore, intervention programme successfully reduced fear of flying.
