What is the nearshore?
This is the area extending seaward from the high water mark where waves begin to break.
What does the nearshore include?
Swash zone
Surf zone
Breaker zone
What is the swash zone?
This is the area where a turbulent layer of water washes up the beach following the breaking of a wave.
What is the surf zone?
This is the area between the point where the waves break, forming a foamy, bubbly surface, and where the waves then move up the beach as swash in the swash zone.
What is the breaker zone?
This is the area where waves approaching the coastline begin to break, usually where the water depth is 5-10m.
What are the four approaches to coastal management?
Hold the line
Retreat the line
Advance the line
Do nothing
What does the hold the line strategy involve?
Existing defences are maintained but no new defences are built.
What is the advance the line approach?
This is where new defences are built offshore.
What is the retreat the line approach.
This is where people are moved out of danger zones.
What is the do nothing approach?
This is were the coastline is only monitored.
When is the do nothing approach users?
It is used when there is nothing of value.
What are bedding planes?
Horizontal lines through rock.
What are joints?
Vertical lines that are weak due to pressure.
What are fissures?
These are long fine cracks in the surface of the rock.
