Geology Flashcards
What is lithology?
This refers to the rock characteristics, including permeability and resistance to erosion.
What can happen to well jointed rocks?
The sea can penetrate along the lines of weakness, making them more vulnerable to erosion.
What is a good example of a resistant rock type?
Granite
What is a good example of less resistant rock?
Boulder clay
What is differential erosion?
This is variation in the rates at which rocs wear away.
What is a concordant coastline?
This is where the different layers of rock lay parallel to the sea.
Give an example of a concordant coastline.
The Purbeck Coast, Dorset is home to Lulworth Cove. Limestone borders the sea.
What is a discordant coastline?
This is where the rock types are perpendicular to the sea.
Give an example of a discordant coastline.
Swanage Coastline, Dorset. Swanage Bay is made of sand and clay and so erodes more easily.
What type of dip do steeper cliffs tend to have?
They tend to have either horizontal strata or dip inland/
What kind of features are produced by rocks that dip seawards?
The features are gently sloping.
