Experiential knowledge
To learn by doing
Obtaining knowledge and understanding of the outdoors by participating in the environment
Allows us to form relationships with the outdoors and develop a sense of place
Ecological
Concerning biological sciences and the science that exists within the different ecosystems, along with the interrelationships of all living organisms
Social
The human interaction with an environment. It refers to the action of a society or community, rather than the individual
Economic perspectives
What the natural environment can hold in terms of resources and income opportunities. It can be directly linked to profit such as tourism, farming, commercial fishing
Positives of technology
Safety, increases participation rates, improves connection and experiences to the outdoor environment (more access)
Gives unskilled participants the chance to partake in out door activities with more confidence and awareness
Negatives of technology
Alienation- disconnects and removes us from OE
Can become dependent on the technology (won’t know what to do if it stops working)
Disconnects us from experiences
As a resource
A resource is best described as something from the environment that supplies, supports or aids humans in some way
For recreation
Recreation is typically characterised by the goals of fun, pleasure and adventure. It is one of the most common values held in relation to the environment
For spiritual connection
Taking time out from the city and every day life to be amongst nature and reconnect with the environment and natural world. In order to have a spiritual connect you don’t need to visit and environment and ‘do something’ instead you can visit and just ‘be’.
As a study site
A location or place where investigation, analysis or other activities occur in the persuite of knowledge
How does SES affect participation
Most OE experiences are very costly, therefore having a low SES can severely limit the range of experiences you can have access too
Explain SES

It relates to an individuals or families economic and social position in relation to others based on education, income and occupation

Has a huge impact on accessing outdoor experiences
Depending on the type of physical ability, some activities may be near impossible to complete due to safety or practicality
Eg physically impaired, disabled etc
