Higher up government law and order?
US marshall- appointed by President in charge of a territory. US marshall could appoint deputies.
Judges- 3 per territory. Appointed by the government.
Lower down government law and order?
Sheriff- Elected by the local people. Kep job for 2 years. Looked after a county.
Town marshalls- Enforced laws in towns.
Wyatt Earp?
Former horse thief, deputy marshall of Doge City, 1881 killed 3 men in cold blood.
Causes of disorder?
Racial hatred, huge area, unreliable law enforcement.
Types of disorder?
Claim-jumping, racial attacks, shootings, bank robberies, train robberies, gang crimes.
Crimes in mining towns?
Gambling, theft, prostitutes, fighting, murder.
How was crime dealt with in mining towns?
Miners courts, usually unfair and biased, usually ended with murder or vigilantes.
How was crime dealt with in cow towns?
Guns were banned, along with cowboys except for when dropping off cows.
Territory wars?
H/S’s didn’t like the long drive going through their back yards.
Johnson County War?
1892 between H/S’s and cowboys. Cattle barons smaller cattlemen. Usually over land and right of way.
