Free 160 acres of land on the Plains if you built a house there and lived there for 5 years.
When was the Timber and Culture Act?
1873
What was the Timber and Culture Act?
Meant that you could only have the 160 acres of land if you planted trees on 40 acres of it (later reduced to 10).
How many people were necessary to become a state?
60 000+
What was the Desert Land Act?
1877, Allowed people to buy dry and desert land for cheap at 640 acres.
Why did people go?
New life, cheap land, escape religious and racial persecution.
What was winter wheat?
Russian wheat that could grow in cold conditions.
What was the windmill water pump?
Invented by Daniel Halliday in 1874. Brought water up from the ground.
What were cow chips?
Buffalo or cow poo that was dried and used as fuel.
