Mountain men?
Beaver trappers who got on well with the Indians. Found the first safe paths through the Rocky Mountains
Push factors?
Overcrowding in the East, economic crises, religious persecution, racial persecution.
Pull factors?
Cheap land West, more money, more space, less persecution, a chance at a new life.
Problems going West?
Going over the mountains, Indian attacks, crossing the Mississippi, disease, animal attacks, run out of resources, cannibalism (Donner Party).
Manifest Destiny?
The idea that the West needed to be civilised by WASPs and that God told them to do it.
The Gold Rush?
James Marshall discovered gold in California in 1848. Everyone rushed over in 1849 (49’ers). Surface good was used up quickly. People made about $3 a day ($80) and lived in mining towns.
Mining towns?
Little shanty towns that were filled with crime, gambling, and alcohol. Prostitutes made the most money, as they were the only women.
Mormon creation?
1823 Joseph Smith saw angel Moroni. Moroni told him about ‘The Bible part 2- Jesus in Space™.’ Smith published the Book of Mormon in 1830.
Mormon beliefs?
No gambling, drinking, pre-marital sex, caffeine, or single ownership of property (including slaves).
Utah?
Wanted independence as a state. They ditched polygamy and the government let them have it, Brigham Young was the real MVP.
