Usually Mexican, black, or white young single men without families.
What was a cowboy’s job?
To look after the cows on the long drive
What was the Long Drive?
The process of moving cows to cowtowns along the railway to go East. 1200-1500 miles long trail average.
When was the Cattleboom?
1880s
Why was the Cattlebooming?
The East wanted beef.
Why did the cowboys and the Homesteaders have beef?
Because the cows trampled H/S’s crops and the H/S’s blocked off water supplies with barbed wire.
When was barbed wire invented?
1874 by Joseph Glidden
Abilene?
Boring town transformed into the first cowtown by Joseph McCoy who got minted from it, but it became rowdy so cowboys were only allowed in to drop off the cows and get paid.
Where was the Chisholm trail?
Texas to Abilene.
