Key Definitions Flashcards
Relative Isotopic Mass
Is the mass of an atom of an isotope in comparison to the mass of 1/12 of a carbon-12 atom
Relative Atomic Mass
Is the weighted average mass of an atom of an element in comparison to the mass of 1/12 of a carbon-12 atom.
Stereoisomer
A stereoisomer has the same structural formula but a different arrangement of atoms in space
Isotope
An atom of the same element with different number of neutrons
Electronegativity
The ability of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons in a covalent bond
Covalent Bond
The electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the bonded atoms nuclei
Ionic Bond
The electrostatic attraction between positively and negatively charged ions
Metallic Bond
The electrostatic attraction between positive metal cations and delocalised electrons
Homologous Series
A series of organic compounds with the same functional group, but with each successive member differing by CH2
Sigma Bond
(Alkanes) the result of two overlapping atomic orbitals, one from each bonded atom
Aromatic Compounds
contain a benzene ring
Aliphatic compounds
Carbon and hydrogen joint together in straight chains, branched chains or non-aromatic rings
Alicylic Compounds
Are aliphatic compounds in non aromatic rings or without side chains
Homolytic Fission
When a covalent bond breaks and each bonded atom receives one of the shared pairs of electrons, forming radicals
Heterolytic Fission
When a covalent bond breaks and one of the bonded atoms takes both of the electrons, forming ions
