Key Definition - Fieldwork Flashcards
Theory:
Bradshaw model show/states that velocity depth and width increase downstream.
In physical landscapes in the UK, we learned that the cross profile of a typical river gets wider and deeper as you move downstream.

Theory:
Accessible - An hour from school car park near and public footpaths meant it was safe.
Riverbank was flat we could safely get in the river.
Site 1: Alwinton (upper course)
Site 2: Harbottle (upper course)
Site 3: Rothbury (middle course)
Located in Northumberland National Park. The source of the river is located in Cheviot Hills.
Site 1 is surrounded by farmland just north of the village of Alwinton meander.

Risks:
☺ River: wellington boots - alert the person in the river
☺ Animals: closing gate, speak quietly and avoid them
☺ Falling: first aid kit & footwear & alert
☺ Weather: if sunny, apply suncream - if rainy the river might be deep (appropriate clothing):

Sampling:
Systematic sampling
a sampling is chosen in a regular (systematic) way.
This could mean they are;
-evenly/regularly distributed in a space. For example every 2 meters along a transect line. To measure the width we… measure every 1 meter.

Sampling:
Primary Data collection:
-use a tape measure
One person held on one side of the bank an one person on the other side. This was done once. At the site 1, the width was 18 meters.
Depth
-ranging pole
-tape measure
Starting with the bank 1 meter using the tape measure. At 1 meter you would put the ranging pole in the water and record the depth (written on the pole). Where the water went to. This would be repeated every meter to the other bank.
