Key Content Area 5B Flashcards
What is the mechanism of an anxiolytic for GAD?
Reduces the bodies response to adrenaline and noradrenaline (helps to reduce the fight or flight response that causes anxiety symptoms)
What is CBT?
Therapy to alter the thought process and promote logical thinking. The new thoughts redirect pathways in the brain and avoid the anxiety response. It also focuses on coping strategies
What are SSRIs and how do they work?
Selective Seratonin Reuptake inhibitors. They boost seratonin levels in the brain by binding to seratonin transporter and stopping it from being reabsorbed, so there is more available to for neurotransmission.
What are SNRIs and how do they work?
Seratonin Noradrenaline Reuptake inhibitors. They boost seratonin and noradrenaline levels in the brain by binding to their transporters and stopping them from being reabsorbed, so there is more available to for neurotransmission.
What are TCAs and how do they work?
Tricyclic antidepressants. They are classified as a sedative because they block the action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine on the muscarinic receptors in the brain.
What are MAOIs and how do they work?
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors. They work by inhibiting the activity of monoamine oxidase which breaks down neurotransmitters such as seratonin, dopamine and noradrenaline.
What are the common mood stabilisers?
Lithium
Anticonvulsants
antipsychotics
What is lithium for and how does it work?
It is used for mood stabilising and it works by inhibiting noradrenaline release. This helps prevent mania
What are anticonvulsants and how do they work?
They suppress hyperactivity in the brain
What are antipsychotics and how do they work?
They inhibit dopaminergic neurotransmission. They are dopamine antagonists
Why are antipsychotics given with anticholinergics?
Because the acetyl choline supression from the anticholinergics works on the dopamine pathways in the brain and supress the hyperactivation caused to the muscarinic receptors therefore reducing some side effects like dystonias
What is interpersonal therapy?
Talk through specific interpersonal issues. Create goals to reduce depression, build support.
What is dialectal behavioural therapy?
Works to reconcile both acceptance and change
Self soothing
pros and cons
distraction techniques
