Key Concepts Flashcards
Describe bacteria structure
May have flagella Slime coat Flexible cell wall GM areas Plasmids small loops of dna Ribosomes
Prokaryotic is
Without nucleus’s and mitochondrion
Are bacteria prokaryoticc
Yes
Are animal cells prokaryotic
No they are eukaryotic
What is osmosis
The diffusion of water molecules through a semi permeable membrane happens a lot in potatoes
Why is active transport used
To transport molecules against a concentration ie won’t work through diffusion or that are too large to fir through the membrane
Is osmosis a passive form of transport
Yes it doesn’t require energy
Is diffusion an aggressive form of transport which requires energy
No
Is active transport a passive form of transport
No it requires energy
Describe the process of active transport
Transport proteins are embedded in the cell membrane. Molecules that can fit in the specific protein fit. The transport protein opens on the opposite side releasing the molecule.
Starch test
Iodine will turn from blue black to browney orange
Lipids test
Emulsion
Shake test substance with ethanol for a min until it dissolves. Then pour into water
Milky emulsion will precipitate if there is any lipids
Test for proteins
Biuret test
Few drops a potassium hydroxide to make solution alkaline
Then as copper sulfate solution
If there is protein copper sukfate will turn from blue to purple
Sugars test
Benedicts
His Reagan’s, heat in water bath of 75 degrees . Positive means coloured precipitate
