Darwin Flashcards
Darwin’s theory 5 stages
Genetic variation; characteristics vary between individuals
Environmental change; condition changes causing more competition
Natural Selection ; by chance genetic advantages make better coping mechanisms
Inheritance ; those with advantage survive passing them to offspring who are better adapted
Evolution; it may repeat
Pentadactyl limbs suggest the
Evolution of humans, bats and dolphins to a common ancestor
Bacteria domain description
No nucleus no unused sections of genes
Archaea domain description
No nucleus, unused sections of genes
Eukarya domain description
Nucleus , unused sections of genes
Golden rice adv
Inserted with daffodil and bacterium gene to produce beta carotene which helps humans produce vitamin a to stop blindness
Know diagram of tissue culture
Yes
Risks of selective breeding
Alleles that may be useful in the future are no longer found
Be bad for animals themselves
May be bad for health in long term effects.
Genetic engineering steps
Cut section of DNA out using restriction enzymes producing jagged, unpaired ends called sticky ends
Use restriction enzymes on bacterium plasmid which will produce same sticky ends
DNA and plasmid are mixed together and the complementary base pairs join up through an enzyme called ligament which acts as a glue
Insert into bacterium and grown in large VATS
Biological control and weaknesses
Using organisms to control pests
May eliminate target population
May eliminate other populations
May affect humans through
Fertilise weakness
Cause excess in minerals that are harmful to organisms and humans
