Key Area 1.8 Genomic sequencing Flashcards
What is genomic sequencing?
The process by which the sequence of nucleotide bases is determined for individual genes or even entire genomes.
What is bioinformatics?
Computer programmes can be used to identify base sequenses by looking for sequence similarities. To compare sequence data, computer and statistical analyses are required.
What are some ways that sequence data can be used?
Comparing differences of:
Members of different diseases causing microorganisms
Members of the same species
Cancerous vs normal cells.
What is phylogenetics?
The study of evolutionary relatedness.
What are molecular clocks used to show?
When species have diverged.
What do molecular clocks assume about mutations?
They occur at a constant rate.
What, other than sequence data, can be used to determine the sequence of events?
Fossil evidence.
What came first, Animals, vertebrates or land plants?
Animals.
What came last, Animals, vertebrates or land plants?
Land plants.
What are the 3 domains of life?
- Bacteria
- Archea
- Eukaryotes
What is pharmacogenetics?
The use of genome information in the choice of drugs to treat patients.
