What are kennedy classifications?
these are classifications of partially edentulous arches and partial dentures
What are kennedy classifications based on?
they are based on the location of edentulous areas within the arch in relation to the remaining natural teeth
What is a class I edentulous area?
it is a situation where the edentulous areas are bilateral and lie posterior to the remaining natural teeth
What is a class II edentulous area?
situation where the edentulour area is unilateral and lies posterior to the remaining teeth
all teeth remain on one side of the arch and a number of teeth remain on the opposite side with no natural teeth posterior to the edentulous area
What is a class III edentulous area?
situation where the edentulous area is unilater and has natural teeth remaining posterior as well as anterior to it
What is a class IV edentulous area?
situation where the only edentulous area is entirely anterior to the remaining teeth
What are modifications?
these are where there are extra edentulous areas
What is a mod I modification?
one extra edentulous space
What is a mod II modification?
two extra edentulous spaces
What is a mod III modification?
3 extra edentulous areas
Why do class IV edentulous spaces have no modifications?
this is because the modifications will fall into the other classifications as they take priority
