Describe how an IR Jammer deceives an IR missile.
By disrupting the modulation signal that the IR detector receives
State the difference between open and closed loop jamming.
IRCM and DIRCM Jammers are open loop EOCM as the system cannot identify the missile types, rather uses a series of predetermined jam codes designed to be effective in defeating up to generation 3 missiles.
DIRCM closed loop jammers are currently in developmental phase. This concept once fully developed will be able to identify the missiles reticle through retroreflections, the system will be able to synchronise and jam the exact frequency required for maximum effect.
State the similarities and differences between directed and non-directed EOCM
Similarities
Both deceive the threat by projecting energy in the direction of the threat to disrupt the returned modulation signal.
Both are covert in operation as the output is filtered to remove radiation in the visible spectrum
Both are open loop system
Differences
RCM can be inflexible in changing the jamming modulation signal whilst DIRCM is more flexible
IRCM consumes very large amounts of power to produce omnidirectional radiation pattern, whilst DIRCM being directed
produces a narrow beam signal that requires relatively low power consumption.
IRCM is large in design and DIRCM is smaller and compact.
Describe how a flare deceives an IR missile.
Required Characteristic #1 - Radiate more energy than target in threats’ detection band(s)
Required Characteristic #2 - Must establish (decoy) energy quickly
Required Characteristic #3 - Separate quickly from the aircraft
List various flare types.
- Spectral Flares
- Thrusted Flare (aka kinematic flares)
- Controlled Rise Time Flare (aka temporal flare)
