KC09 - Electronic Support Flashcards
Define the following: Electronic Support (ES)
Actions taken to search for, intercept, locate, record and analyse radiated electro-magnetic energy for the purpose of exploiting these emissions in support of military operations.
Define the following: Probability of Intercept (POI), Probability of Report (POR)
A measure of the ESM system’s spatial and frequency coverage. (How likely is it to detect a signal assuming that the signal strength is strong enough).
Describe the capabilities and characteristics of an RWR
Detect and Classify threat emitters
Determine direction
Can trigger Counter Measures
Record parameters
Simple Information
Requires very little operator input
Normally inside the battle zone
Describe the capabilities and characteristics of an ESM
Detect and Classify threat emitters
Determine direction
Can trigger Counter Measures
Record parameters
Detailed information
Dedicated operator
Normally outside the battle zone - more sensitive
Explain threat library ambiguity
Ambiguity occurs when different threats have the same parameter
System cannot distinguish between 2 emitters, therefore ambiguity exist
List common ES receivers direction-finding techniques
- Spinning antenna (Directional)
- Amplitude Comparison
- Interferometer
- Time distance from arrival
Define Probability of Report (POR)
POR is the probability that an intercepted signal will be correctly identified and displayed within a set time limit.
