KC03 - EW Terminology Flashcards
Define the following: Signal Bandwidth
The difference between upper and lower frequency limits of a band containing the useful components of a signal
List the Effects of Noise
- Masks weak signals
- Degrades sensitivity
- Can result in false targets.
State the relationship between thermal noise, temperature and bandwidth
Thermal Agitation Noise
- Produced by molecular agitation in circuitry
- Proportional to temperature and bandwidth as seen in the formula to the right
- Randomly occurring.
Define the following: Sensitivity
Minimum detectable signal level (MDS) or Smin.
Apply the units of dB to EM theory.
Number = db
0.001 = -30
0.01 = -20
0.1 = -10
1 = 0
10 = 10
100 = 20
1000 = 30
10,000 = 40
100,000 = 50
1,000,000 = 60
10,000,000 = 70
Define the following: Noise
Any unwanted signal.
Define the following: Gain
- Receiver sets the gain to “best” see returns
- Constant False Alarm Rate.
Define the following: Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR)
The ratio of the signal power to the noise power.
S/N = Signal PWR / Noise PWR
