KC14 - MAWS Flashcards
State the purpose of the MAWS
To detect incoming threat missiles with enough time to initiate effective countermeasures
State the essential and desirable for MAWS requirements
Essential:
Detect early launch of IR missiles
Low False Alarm Rate
High Probability of Detection
Desirable:
Automatic connection of CMDS
Detect Boost and Coast Phases
Calculate (estimate) Time to Go
Determine Missile Type
Trace Missile Position
Compare IR and RF to UV MAWS
IR MAWS
Large amount of IR clutter in the environment
Very hard to detect and track IR energy from a missile
IR MAWS generally used for fast jets with minimal environment interference
RF MAWS
Low Tech (Low Cost)
Pulse Doppler Radar
Detects Approaching Targets
ACTIVE!
UV MAWS
Detects UV plume emissions
ONLY at Launch and Boost phases
Solar blind region (0.23 - 0.28 micron meters)
UV MAWS are built to prevent this specific region from providing the system with false alarms.
Not completely bullet proof, there are certain manmade sources which can trigger false alarms.
Describe Laser Warning Receivers (LWR)
Uses the properties of Laser to detect a threat. Lasers are:
- Coherent, high power and a single wavelength
Can classify threats by
- Pulsed/Continuous, Modulation, Power
- 3 Main Threats
- Range Finders
- Laser Illuminators
- Laser Guided Weapons
