Karl Popper: Falsification Symposium Flashcards
What perspective does Karl Popper take ?
Falsification symposium
What does Karl popper: falsification symposium argue for
It’s not about statements being meaningful but if statement is scientific or not based on psuedo-science
Karl popper: falsification symposium
Language has to be scientific to be meaningful needed to be tested and proven false, associated language as scientific as meaningful what is this ?
Epistemic imperialism
Karl popper: falsification symposium
What is Poppers epistemic imperialism based on ?
Language has to be scientific to be meaningful needed to be tested and proven false, associated language as scientific as meaningful
Karl popper: falsification symposium
What is falsification principle
- must be prepared for what can prove your statement to be false
- statements can be falsifiable as able to what would prove it wrong so MEANINGFUL* as able to say what would prove your statement wrong- ** falsification**
Karl popper: falsification symposium
What does popper argue about religious people and their statements they make ?
When religious people make statements about God they’re not ready to say what amount of suffering would make them say there is NO God or probe God is not loving - so not ready to falsify belief in GOD
Karl popper: falsification symposium
What are Christian’s response to Falsification principle
Must be purpose behind suffering- no Gods fault but humanity and end of the world is near
Karl popper: falsification symposium
By theists not being prepared to state what would make them stop believing in God and find explanation to believe what does this lead to ?
DEATH OF GOD BY A THOUSAND QUALIFICATIONS - FLEW
Karl popper: falsification symposium
What does popper say about scientific claims ?
They invite others to test their hypothesis to see if it can be disproved
E.g “ if someone claims water boils at 100 degrees” this claim is testable and I false you can show it to be false
What is the difference between verification and falsification principle ?
- Verification: positive approach for evidence
- falsification : disprove, stricter approach as disproves own theory to give confidence in hypothesis
What is a critism of Karl
Popper ?
This cannot apply to religious people as they seek confirmation that there is a God and not to disprove e.g reading bible,Going to Church
